6 Things About HONGDAE

Hongdae, or Hongik University station is one of the most favourite tourist attraction in Seoul. I myself like soooo muchhhhhh Hongdae area. What I love about Hongdae?
Here we go:

1. Youthful Atmosphere Nightlife
I know I know I'm not young anymore, but living in such a dynamic and lively area make me feel alive again! Hongdae hosts lots of guesthouse, so you will meet many western and English-speaking tourists in Hongdae club.

Not just club or pub, being an arts university a famous place to check out on the weekends in Hongdae is the gathering of musicians in the small park in Hongdae, it makes a great atmosphere in the evening and the crowd that gathers there can be pretty big. A Korean band ‘10cm’ were frequent players in Hongdae and gained a lot of fame in the area. Live Music in Hongdae Park enables you to meet future K-Pop stars! ^_^
some pub and club in Hongdae

2. Street Snacks
What I love about Seoul is you can never be hungry. Every 5 steps you can find "pojangmachas" (street snacks seller) What kind of snacks? Seems I've been talked much about them. They range from savory to sweet, spicy or not. You can choose freely and they are all yummy. When I'm in Seoul, I often skip lunch and dinner because I always eat street snacks!! LOL =))) I try to remember the names of them so will make me easier to order, but fail!! -___- Finally I just choose one by one or by pointing and ask "Igeo eolmayeyo?" -How much does it cost? And.....remembering some Korean words for numbers are very useful!!
ilcheon won =1000won
icheon won =2000won
samcheon won =3000won
Let the picture talk how yummy Korean street snacks areeeeee :p
Yummy guarantee!!

3. Saturday Art Market
Wanna get your face drawing or get cartoon picture of yourself? You come to the correct place. Every weekend in Hongdae from the afternoon to early evening you can find a small art market in the park with many stands selling hand made products. It is a great place to pick up a gift or something unique while in Korea.

Hongdae Saturday Art Market

4. Themed Cafe
Korean loves coffee, or maybe just like to hangout in cafe? Hongdae hosts twenty or more themed cafe. They are so uniquely themed and adorable. If you looking for something special to blast your day, hongdae cafe can give you a smile in a rough day.

Bear Cafe
Hello kitty cafe
I went Hello Kitty cafe and spent 4000 won for Chocolate Banana Waffle and Jasmine’s latte costs 4200won. Kinda expensive and still hungry. Haha, well we bought the atmosphere not a drink :p

Nature Cafe
This one is my favorite: Sheep cafe with real sheep!! There are REAL cutie lambs in the coffee shop. You can seat near them.. pat them.. and feed them :)

* Address: 서울시 마포구 서교동 486 B1F (서교푸르지오상가 지하 121)
      121, B1F Prugio, 486, Seogyo-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, Korea

5. Nanta show
Not interested in Nanta Show? What if 9 of 10 of your friends tell you Nanta show is very funny and a "must watch show"? ^_^ Unfortunately I didn't have time to watch them even their building is kinda near to my guesthouse... But next time if have a chance will surely have a go.

The story is about three chef that prepared meals for a wedding party, then suddenly the Manager put one of his nephew that incapable of cooking in the team. That's when funny thing started :p

Nanta show

6. Trick Eye Museum
This place is a "MUST VISIT" place. Take a funny pictures of yourself and your friend. You will have alot of fun there. Really guys, they are better than Maddame Tussaud!!  You can find another trick eye museum in Busan and Jeju.
Trick eye museum

ps: Why they called Hongdae for Hongik University?
In Korea, university = daehagyo. So Hongik Daehagyo ....we called HONGDAE.... and Ehwa University we called EEDAE :D

Don't miss Hongdae for your trip! One day is not enoughhhhhhhhhhh............hahahaaa

Look at those cute doll, so unique!!

Go 150m straight, and cross the street.
Turn left, and go 500m straight towards the Hongik University entrance.

Ehwa and Sinchon : University area...many people sell clothing and accessories with affordable price. And as usual, the streets of Seoul are paved with delicious snacks.

2. Ihwa-dong, Dongdaemun, Myeongdong, and Namdaemun also close each other.

Make sure you know how to walk. I walk from Dongdaemun to Myeongdong, but lost in the way of searching Namdaemun way so use subway then :p

What will you find there?

- Ihwa dong: Hyehwa station (line4) exit 2:
Turn left into Dongsung-gil street, walk 200m towards Lock museum, and follow the mural. It's a huge public mural projects in Seoul. The murals are renewed every year!!
Hyehwa mural
- Dongdaemun: Hello apm, Migliore, Good morning city, Doosan Tower(doota) provide convenient and modern shopping environment. They sell clothing, watches, skincare, foodcourt, and everything you wish in the shopping center. If you don't know what souvenirs will you bring back, Doota offers alot in 5th floor. I bought some keychain and magnet there.
Some tips:
1. Look around Doota first and then Migliore. Migliore often has same products as in Doota and you can haggle at Migliore.
2. Hello apm offer the lowest price of them all. But as you know, no two clothing are the same.
3. Most stores open at AM 10: 30 and close at PM 5.
4. Closing
Doota closes from 11pm Sunday ~ 8pm Monday
Migliore closes on Monday
APM and Good morning City closes on Tuesday
(on closing hours, check out the road market situated in front the complexes)
Hello apm and good morning city in Dongdaemun

- Myeongdong: Myeongdong offers skincare in every step. The face shop located next to Holika holika and etude house is just in the next door. ^^ Wooohooooooo!!!!!!! U can freely choose. And one thing I love about them is they always offer free sample without needed to ask. I lazy to ask sample, but they generously give so much!!!

Myeongdong

- Namdaemun: Well after visiting Dongdaemun and Myeongdong, I go to Namdaemun with not much cash left and low level of shopping appettite, LOL =))) They also sell children's clothing, men, and women's clothing, daily miscellaneous goods, kitchenware and local and imported products. Actually I interested to go to the food street and jokbal street!! They seems yummy!!

3. Gangnam Area

Take subway to Sinsa Station(Line 3)

  • Walk to Garosu-gil, the bohemian, tree-lined street with restaurant, cafes, and boutiques. This is a good place to have lunch.
  • Apgujeong, known as the " Beverly Hills of Seoul" even has its own Rodeo drive.
    • Apgujeong is the leading fashion mecca, formed as a cultural zone with a high propensity for consumption. It creates leading fashion trends, customer friendly shops, foreign brand shops with high-quality goods
    • You can visit the famous "de chocolate coffee", and "mango six cafe" here.
  • Bongeunsa Temple
    • Want to see the contrast between old and new in most extreme? Get on the subway, head to Samseong Station(Line2) and walk to Bongeunsa Temple. Founded in 8th century, the view of the graceful Korean buildings, with the glittering skyscraper of Gangnam looming just beyond them, really leaves an impression. Be sure to visit on Buddha's Birthday, when it hosts a paper lantern exhibit
  • End your day at COEX Mall
  • COEX Mall
    •  It is Asia's largest underground shopping mall with an area of about 85,000 square metres
    • Along with hundreds of shops, the mall houses two food courts, Megabox (movie theatres),COEX Aquarium, a large bookstore, and the Kimchi Field Museum. It also features a game area which is used to film computer game tournaments.

Cheonggyecheon Stream, Free Foot Spa

First time I learned the map of Seoul before my travel, I read something strange in some river, example between Dongdaemun and Gwanjang market. Those two are on my itinerary and I plan to walk through the "Cheonggyecheon Stream" What kind of stream is that? Some says it's "Free Foot Spa" Haaaaaaaaaaa......jukgetdaaaaaaaa ^____^ Which other country have free foot spa for everyone? :D

I never imagine have such folliage in a big city such as Seoul. Seeing greenery like in the forest in the middle of crowded and packed city give relax atmosphere especially after spending whole day walking. Look at the photos below:

I imagine like heaven in the earth to enjoy free foot spa after shopping whole day, LOL. Chillaxing treat for our feet after a long day tour around South Koreaaaaa. Relaxing, eating snacks while watching modern building and people busy walking in a breeze atmosphere I feel I can spend hours there. Look at those clean water flow.

Sometimes in November there are Lantern Festival in Cheonggyecheon Stream. Make sure you check the date before you visit ^^
Night view also wonderful:

These video below are my dreams...If I come to Seoul in spring or autumn will be awesome!!! Some locals also enjoy the free foot spa.

Buttt, since I come to Seoul in winter....all I can see is snow and cold water! I dare not to open my shoes enjoy free foot spa, everyone will think I'm crazy girl -___- My dream was broken, huhuhuuuuuuu. Just taking this pic. I'm standing in the bridge after walking from Doosan Tower, walk along pyeongchang market, the right side is Pyeongchang market, and the right side is Gwanjang market, where I bought my dinner there :)

If you plan to visit Seoul in spring or autumn, make sure to enjoy free foot spa there. More info about Cheonggyecheon Stream: HERE

Journey to the Seoul

Travelling is my soul...

I went to Korea mid February 2013. First time experience winter in my life!!!!! And first time SOLO TRAVELLER So exciteddddd to the maxx!! Haha! I can’t forget the first time witnessing the snow the first glance I open my eyes widely from 7hours flight from my country.
Korean air, finally arrived :D
It’s long journey yet I’m not tired, still eager and passionate to go to the world’s BEST airport for 7 straight years. Tadaaaaaaaaa!!
Incheon International Airport
It’s 6am in the morning, very cold -7 degree Celcius. Not cold inside the airport, I go to the direction of AREX (Airport Express) by Korean Railroad( KORAIL) The airport was so empty, not many people there, I'm afraid to get lost, but the direction is easy to follow, so minimize my worriness, ^_^ Thanks to the government!

Take a snap pic of Korean ATM bank. hohohoooo..imagine I was korean and need some won :p

Still inside the airport: Interesting christmas decoration. Omoooooo I want one of the golden presentsssss there please fall down to meeee ^_^

Day1

My first destination is a guesthouse in Hongdae area. Hongik University station is one of the subway station that passed by KORAIL, so lucky me!! *I intentionally search guesthouse near Hongik station, LOL*
I wear my winterwear and take baby step in the snow. Cannot check in because I’m too early, but I can leave my baggage in guesthouse and continue my journey to Gyeongbokgung palace. The Biggest Palace in the heart of Seoul. It's a MUST VISIT PLACE!!!!!
Look at the pile of the snow near the gate!!! For a new experiencer of snow like me. They looks gorgeous and want to make a snowman!! Hahaaa!!!

Here is the ticket for admission to Gyeongbokgung Palace 3000 won. So cheap!!

I come just in the right time to witness “Royal Guard Changing Ceremony"  It was around 9am at that time.

The guards are extremely serious. We cannot stand too close to them. There are some security guard just to make sure the tourists didn't interrupt the "ROYAL GUARD CHANGING CEREMONY". We feel like flying to year 1000M when Shilla Dinasty ruled over Korea.

We can wear Korean traditional costumes for free in Gyeongbokgung palace. They even so generous help me take picture ^^ RED my fav color!! Haha I'm a guard too now, I must guard the Korean Kingdom :p

Satisfy with Gyeongbokgung Palace, I continue my journey to Dongdaemun market. Chill weather forced me to grab some food on my way there. Tteokpoki is the most popular snacks in Seoul. Here I found near Dongdaemun.
Tteokpoki, must try Seoul street snacks
Famous to be a spicy food, but I didn't find it spicy. More into sour and sweet taste. Abit spicy for western, but for tropical girl like me, I used to eat more spicy food in Indonesia. But very special taste, unforgettable. MUST TRY!

Shopaholic in one day! Place like Myeongdong, Dongdaemun, and Namdaemun are heaven for fashion and skincare products!!! They also close each other. I go to those place in one day without subway. Walk and walk and here some random pics of beautiful Seoul. Andddddd....I'm lost everywhere!!! hahaha!!
Spot Etude House in Myeongdong
Korean Post Office Building from near.
How to cross the road?

Haechi shop
I wonder why street shop named: "HAECHI" shop? Here is the answer:
Seoul Metropolitan Government chose Haechi as the Mascot of Seoul City. They use the Haechi Character on public materials, at festivals and events. I have spotted the character somewhere along my travels in Seoul.
Spot Korea Grand Sale Banner

There is explanation in hangul for this statue
Some people use bicycle in the road
Beautiful flower aren't they?
February means spring will come soon. I spot some people take yellow flower in the subway, and now I found the seller!! Why most of them are yellow? I want to ask, but they didn't understand English. Hmm..... but I still love them, bring cheerful atmosfer for the cold winter day.

To cross the road, must go through underground shopping center
Korean Post Office from accross the road!
Finally I can accross the big road!! A bit tricky because after I go down to the underground shopping center, I get lost of direction. I want ask direction, but old people in Seoul doesn't understand English. But the young generation are very helpful and understand English :)
Dongdaemun History and Culture Park
Dropping by in Gwanjang sijang near dinner time is just nice. All nice local food can be find here. Jokbal, samgyetang, kimbap, hweorigamja, squid, chicken, shrimp, and many more delicious food make me hungry. I order some hot soup and kimbap for taking home *oops guesthouse*
Gwanjang Sijang
Kimbap
Night at Hongdae area is one of the best night u could ever find in the world. Nanta Building just in front of my "Hey Backpackers" guesthouse. And I shop some accesorries and of course yummy street snacks there!
My favorite is spicy sausages skewers. Nom nom~

Nanta Show
More and more street vendor packed the street.

All accessories only 1000won! What a heaven!!
Many street vendor owner are also the designer
Mr. Donut anyone?
Attraction like this is common in some cafe in Hongdae

Day 2

The guesthouse is not just nice in location, but the visitors also. I meet some new friends from Canada, Germany, China, and Taiwan. Most of the guys travel alone like me. So we decided to take a brunch together near the guesthouse in hongdae. Our menu is bibimbap.

The special thing about bibimbap is how we eat them. Step 1: we had everything in our table. Vegetables, rice, gochujang, and kimchi.

Step 1. Bibimbap
Step2. Put gochujang and all vegetables in the bowl of rice
Step 2. Put gochujang
Step 3. Mix it altogether, and Tadaaaa!!!! This is it!! Ready to enjoy. Super yummy!!
Step3. Mix it altogether
After finish bunch together we go our own direction. The Chinese and Taiwanese guy will go back to their hometown, My German friend will meet his friend who studied in Hongik University, my Canadian friend is going to the job interview. He wants to work in Korea. ENVY!! hahahaa. So...how about me??? I'm just going to the Seoul Station, browsing some clothes in Lotte Outlet and go to Korean Style Spa ....."jimjjilbang!!"

Lotte Outlet just in front of Seoul Station Exit A
Jjimjilbang! You can get a hot bath, massages, watch tv, eat, sleep, and spa!
Siloam Jimjjilbang, 5minutes walk from behind Lotte Outlet building
What I love the most in Seoul is to be a part of community, So I try jimjjilbang. But my passion of experience Korean culture makes my first time jimjjilbang become unescapable moment!! 5 floor of amazingness. Around 15 rooms with different floor and temperature vary from -20 degree to 65 degree celcius. I tried charcoal room, salt room, jade room, yellow earth room, and more except ice room. Besides that, Siloam also have fitness center, massage room, beauty salon.
One of  15 spa room u can enjoy yourself there
After finish spa and showering, I ate smoked egg, very refresh feeling.  First, I’m so shy to be in public nudity even separated by gender, but after enjoying myself there, I feel like always want to go back there everyday!!!!!!!!!! I spent my night here since they also have women and men sleeping room. Really guys, this is better than a 5 star hotel!!

Day 3

Day 3 means I must go home T_T Only short trip to Korea. Feel so sad, but I can't bear any more cold days. So this day I go explore Incheon airport. FIVE HOURS in advance before my flight! I must be crazy. But the complete facilities in Incheon airport make boring goes faaaarrrr away from you. Here we go:

Stationary, book and magazines in English also provided there
Korean Traditional Cultural Experience Center
We can experience Korean culture here
They teach me how to make this plate using Hanji
The explanation about Hanji Craft
Daegeum, Korean traditional music instrument
Haegeum, Korean traditional music instrument
Gayageum, Korean traditional music instrument
Snoopy cafe also have branch in Incheon airport
So as Hello Kitty Cafe
Orchestra, they make amazing performance in airport!
My best flight experience
Five hours in Incheon goes very fast. Chilling out in cafe and shopping some skincare in Lotte Duty Free, now it's my time for boarding by Korean Air

Jeju Island from above
Running nose and red face experience because of cold winter, but feel warm inside my heart. If had a chance to go back Korea again, I will very grateful to experience every seasons there. Summer, Spring, Autumn. Wait for me, OK ^_~
